The 12C wooden statue of a Black Madonna, known as La Moreneta to Catalans, is displayed in Montserrat Monastery. According to legend it was found in a mountain cave by shepherds. It is displayed above the high altar, in a niche that can be reached from the chapel off the right-hand aisle, recognisable by the steady flow of pilgrims who come to pay her homage. The services, complete with Gregorian chants, are remarkably beautiful, in particular at Christmas and Easter.
