KanazawaNoh Museum

Useful information

Description

Noh theatre flourished in Kanazawa under the patronage of the Maeda clan during the Edo period. The local Kaga Hosho school popularised this classical Japanese opera well beyond the samurai class for which it was the traditionally reserved. Because Noh was so deeply rooted in the hearts of the city's inhabitants, it survived the abolition both of feudalism and of the warrior clans. This small museum gives an insight into the structure of Noh performance and presents a highly valuable collection of kimonos and masks worn by the actors.
