Useful information

Description

Next to the Royal British Columbia Museum, Thunderbird Park is dotted with American Indian totem poles by Kwakwaka'wakw sculptor Mungo Martin (1879-1962). The artist also created the large traditional Wa'waditla house with, painted on its façade, a sea monster - one of the family crests. Outstanding recognition for the descendants of Mungo, who in 1953 participated in the first public potlatch (a First Nations ceremony) authorised in British Colombia since it was banned in 1884 (the ban was lifted in 1951).
