Description

Aapravasi Ghat (Immigration Depot), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is embedded deep in the collective memory of Mauritians. It was here that immigrants, primarily from India, were unloaded and indentured to work for next to nothing in the sugar plantations following the abolition of slavery. Half a million people transited here from 1834 to 1910. Today the buildings have been restored and provide a moving testimonial to this massive period of migration.
