Lake Neusiedl, Europe's westernmost steppe lake, is located at the border of the Alps and the Eurasian landmass. It is one of Burgenland's main attractions and a paradise for cyclists, windsurfers and strolling families. National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel was created in 1992 to protect the area and is jointly run by Austria and Hungary. Since 2001, the landscape of the Neusiedler See has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
