Saviour Tower
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Dating from 1491 and built by Solari, this is the Kremlin's main tower, through which high dignitaries and ambassadors entered the fortress. Built with double walls, Savior Tower was enlarged in 1624 with a complex crown composed of a drum(tchetverik) topped by an octagonal structure (vosmerik) that is the base of a pyramid-shaped steeple, the whole reaching a height of 71m, including the red star. It owes its name to three icons that were once placed above the door, and boasts a clock with four dials and chimes (1851-1852).
