Useful information

Description

In 1531 the Indian Juan Diego saw his first vision of the Virgin on Tepeyac Hill, then the holy image was "immortalised" on the robe he was wearing. Today, the Virgin of Guadalupe is a national icon worshipped by all of Mexico. The sanctuary built in her honour (the original 1709 basilica, sinking inexorably, was replaced in 1976 by a new basilica designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez) attracts millions of the faithful on 12 December, her feast day.
