Near the bay, Plaza de la Vigía marks the site of the original foundation of the town, and has at its centre a statue of the unknown soldier, a tribute to those killed in the 1895 war of independence. To the east of the square stands the Teatro Sauto, a fine neo-Classical building (1862) built by Italian set-designer Daniele dell'Aglio, who also painted the frescoes in the main hall. Famous artists who appeared here include Sarah Bernhardt in 1887 and ballerina Anna Pavlova in 1915.
