Useful information

Description

The world's only privately owned international biosphere reserve, Grandfather Mountain (5,964ft) lies within a 3,000-acre park. Here you'll find the Mile High Swinging Bridge-the highest suspension foot bridge in the US-strung between two peaks; a nature museum; a theater, seven wildlife habitats, and a network of beautiful hiking trails (some rigorous and some moderate). Be sure to traverse Grandfather's perimeter via the elevated roadway of Linn Cove Viaduct (mile 304), from which you'll enjoy panoramic views of the valleys below. Building the viaduct in 1987 marked the completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, more than 50 years after it was begun.
