Description
For over 1 000 years, pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean converged here. They came to honour Aphrodite, very close to the place where she emerged from the water. From the great temple, reconstructed several times, only high walls built of colossal stones remain. On the edge of the site, a manor built by the Franks houses a small museum. It may come as a surprise that the Aphrodite revered in Kouklia is not represented by a graceful marble goddess, but by a simple stone of respectable size, on display here.
