Geku

Useful information

Description

The outer Geku shrine of the Ise sanctuary is dedicated to Toyouke-no-omikami, goddess of agriculture and industry and protector of harvests and homes. Symbolically, it is she who offers Amaterasu and the other kami the sacred food that the priests of Ise leave twice a day in the Mike-den, a pavilion behind the main shrine. This area is closed to the public. Like the Naiku, the Geku is rebuilt every 20 years. Its architecture features the same primitive and minimalist style felt to be the epitome of beauty and purity in Japan.
