This gigantic monument, in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama, was built in memory of the dead of the Civil War (1936-39) from 1940 to 1958 by Franco. It is dominated by a huge cross and known as the Valle de los Caídos ("Valley of the Fallen"). The road leading to the foot of the basilica, carved out of the mountain face, passes through an imposing site.
