The Plaza de San Pedro Claver is dominated by the imposing Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, built in 1580 then rebuilt in 1654. San Pedro Claver Corberó (1580-1654), a Jesuit missionary and veritable pioneer of human rights, arrived in Cartagena at the age of 20 and dedicated the 40 years of his ministry to redeeming slaves. A small museum devoted to the holy man and his work can be found next to the church.
