Useful information

Description

This corner tower, a vestige of the first city wall (11C-13C), was restored in 1967. It has an octagonal staircase turret and a broken rampart walk lined with merlons. Close by was the Steenport (demolished in 1760), where Frans Anneessens (1660-1719) is said to have been imprisoned. This martyr of the city was then beheaded for leading a rebellion against new taxes.
