Useful information

Description

The 1834 school and adjacent 1806 African Meeting House formed the heart of Boston's black community following the Revolution. Opened in 1835 as the nation's first publicly funded school for black children, the Abiel Smith building now contains a restored schoolroom and exhibits on African-American history. Behind the school stands the nation's oldest (1806) remaining black church, the African-American Meeting House (8 Smith Ct.).
