Useful information

Description

Next to King's Chapel is King's Chapel Burying Ground, Boston's oldest cemetery, founded in 1630. It is the final resting place of John Winthrop (the Massachusetts Bay Colony's first governor), John Alden (a passenger on the Mayflower and founder of the Plymouth settlement), and of Elizabeth Paine, who is thought to have inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's unhappy heroine, Esther Prynne, in his novel The Scarlet Letter.
