A little outside Borgholm, the enormous ruins of this formerly mighty castle dominate the moor. Like the castle at Kalmar, it defended the strait and was used as a southern outpost of Sweden. The remains of the primitive keep are visible in the northwest corner of the interior courtyard. This stronghold was seriously damaged during the Kalmar War (1611-1613).
