In the pleasant town of Bangli, ancient capital of the Gelgel dynasty, the impressive Pura Kehen was the site of sovereigns' coronations. It rises over eight terrace levels against a backdrop of lush greenery. Elephant statues greet visitors at the foot of the steps. Further up, the finely worked entrance gateway opens onto a magnificent banyan tree, on which is mounted a bale kulkul (summoning drum). Continue through three courtyards, the last of which has elegantly aligned meru.
