Rome, the ‘Eternal City’, truly lives up to its name! As soon as you set foot in the city's historic streets, you will be struck by the beauty, richness and authenticity of the place. Roman ruins, the wonders of the Vatican and a vibrant atmosphere: let yourself be carried away by the magic of this unique city.

Day 1: Start with ancient Rome

  • Morning
Begin your visit to the former Caput Mundi (capital of the world) with its ruins. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to plan a visit in the very early morning. On this first day, start your journey under the arches of the famous Colosseum. Continue to the equally famous and equally impressive Roman Forum, with its temples, triumphal arches, and basilicas, where you can still feel the heartbeat of the ancient city. You will experience similar sensations and emotions when you stand before the ruins of Palatine Hill. After exploring them, leave the cradle of Roman civilisation and head to the Piazza del Campidoglio, where your morning in the footsteps of ancient builders will come to an end.
  • Lunch
For a well-deserved break, head down to the Theatre of Marcellus, one of the oldest in Rome. Admire the architectural layers of the building, built by Augustus, which later became a temple and then a palace. For lunch, why not choose a small establishment in the Ghetto?
  • Afternoon
After your meal, head to the Pantheon. Take the opportunity to enjoy one of Rome‘s best coffees at Caffè Sant’Eustachio or Tazza d’Oro, whose cafes are just a few steps away. Then take a post-prandial stroll and lose yourself in the narrow streets of Baroque Rome. Fountains, statues and mascarons (faces in the architecture) abound, providing a wealth of details to photograph and admire. Stop by the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi and, nearby, the Church of Sant’Agostino. In addition to their architectural treasures, you will see some of Caravaggio’s greatest masterpieces. Spend the rest of the afternoon at the Palazzo Altemps (National Roman Museum).
  • Evening
At the end of the day, stroll around Piazza Navona, among the painters and street artists, and enjoy an aperitif in one of the many bars on the square. End your first day at Campo de’Fiori. There is a market here every day, making it the ideal place for a dinner full of local flavours.
🧭
Get a bird’s eye view

Rome is built on seven hills, which offer several magnificent views of the city. There’s no shortage of outlooks! Depending on where you find yourself, you can explore Piazza del Campidoglio, Piazza del Quirinale, the terrace of the Vittoriano, the Janiculum walk, the terrace of Castel Sant’Angelo, the Pincio gardens or the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

Day 2: From the grand piazzas to the Villa Borghese

  • Morning
Spend the morning around Piazza di Spagna, where you can enjoy everything from art to shopping. Take a break at the unmissable Antico Caffè Greco. Then head to Piazza del Popolo for a visit to the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Stay in the neighbourhood for lunch near the square, or, on a sunny day, head to the Pincio for a picnic in the park.
  • Afternoon and evening
Take in the shade of the tall trees and foliage of Rome’s largest park. The gardens of the Villa Borghese are among the Italian capital’s must-see attractions, featuring terraces, viewpoints, lakes, and museums. Please note that the magnificent Galleria Borghese can only be visited by appointment. Take your time, relax and admire the treasures of this beautiful property. In these contemplative surroundings, you can take a stroll far from the city’s hustle and bustle. Once you’ve finished your tour, head back to the centre via the famous Trevi Fountain, another of the city’s must-see attractions. For dinner, stay in the neighbourhood and head to Piazza del Quirinale to watch the world go by.

Day 3: Visit the Vatican and stroll along the banks of the Tiber

  • Morning
Arrive early at the Vatican, where you can spend the morning exploring St. Peter’s Basilica and a selection of works in the Vatican Museums, home to the breathtaking Sistine Chapel. Remember to buy your ticket in advance to avoid spending the morning queuing.
  • Afternoon and evening
Visit Castel Sant’Angelo, then walk down the right bank of the Tiber to reach the Janiculum Hill (Passeggiata del Gianicolo). Climb up to the Janiculum terrace and enjoy the splendid view of Rome. At the end of the day, cross the river for an evening on the other side, in the popular Trastevere district.

One more day to spend in Rome?

Extend your weekend with a day trip to Tivoli, home to the Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este. If you love old buildings and sea bathing, treat yourself to a trip to Ostia. In less than an hour, you’ll be on the coast. First, discover Ostia Antica, Rome’s archaeological site and ancient port. You are sure to admire the well-preserved ruins, streets, market square and mosaics. The city appears before your eyes, just like when the ancients lived there. And after that… Why not go and take a dip in the water at Ostia Lido, the nearest beach?
