The Zemen Monastery comprises several white-washed buildings, featuring galleries, surrounding a fine meadow. In the centre stands the church of St-John-the-Theologian (11C), which has retained splendid frescoes. Note St Ann, St Contantine and St Helena and, above all, admire the 14C frescoes. They are remarkable, in particular the portraits of St-John-of-Rila (founder of the monastery of the same name) and of the benefactors. Very little is known of the anonymous artist, referred to as the Master of Zemen, apart from the fact that his style shows strong oriental influences.
