Useful information

Description

This sacred Muisca site was used for sun worship and the associated fertility rituals. Its two rows of 55 and 56 stone columns (1.80m tall and 40cm wide), most of which have a phallic appearance, were probably a rudimentary sun observatory. Most of the monoliths in Monquirá archaeological park have undergone carbon-14 dating, which situates them as dating back to around 900 BC.
