Description

Its dominant position and the proximity of Portugal lent Monterrei Castle an important role. The fortress used to include convents, a hospital and an entire village that was abandoned in the 19C. Once through the three surrounding walls, you reach the 15C square keep and 14C Torre das Damas (Ladies' Tower). The 13C church has a finely sculpted portal.
