In the first half of the 20C, Iceland made a great effort to reforest its landscapes, with a view to restoring the country's original appearance before deforestation and the devastation brought about by natural catastrophes. Hallormsstadaskógur Forest, the largest forest in Iceland (740ha), was planted with trees imported from places such as Siberia, Scandinavia and Alaska. The arboretum, which has a trail running through it, boasts 70 different species.
