Iglesia Vieja
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

At Iglesia Vieja, off the beaten path in an out-of-the-way area of the Pacific coast, you feel the thrill of the explorer. Little is known about this vast site, perched at an altitude of 700m and from where you can see the ocean. The inhabitants imagined the vestiges of a church, hence the name. It is thought that it was founded around 1 000 BC by a Mixe-Zoquean group and that it shows Olmec and Zapotec influences. Several interesting steles and engraved stones are of particular note.
