This peaceful and verdant site with its deep valley and a torrent was a major centre of Thracian civilisation, thought to have been founded in the 9C BC and at its peak in the Hellenistic period (4C-3C BC). On this spot, there once stood a major city with two temples and a series of burial tumuli (over 100). The fabulous Sveštari royal tomb, a Unesco World Heritage Site, was unearthed here.
