Description
Traditionally, Cape Sounion is visited from the Apollo Coast, with a return to Athens at dusk. An outrider of Attica watching over the entrance to the Saronic Gulf, Akrotiri Sounio, Homer's "sacred promontory" is admirably situated facing the Aegean and the Cyclades. The ruins of the Temple of Poseidon grace the landscape. This is the "Cape Colonna" that inspired Romantic writers like Byron, Chateaubriand and Lamartine in the 19C.
