The Kerkennah archipelago, which consists mainly of the Chergui and Gharbi islands, lies off the Tunisian coast near Sfax and is the perfect place in which to laze on the beach. Barely higher than sea level, these long sandbanks can be identified only by the silhouettes of their palm trees reaching up to the sky. The islanders here live off mullet and octopus fishing, a skill which requires very particular techniques. You may wish to accompany the fishermen on one of their trips - this, along with swimming in the sea, is about the only activity available on the archipelago.
