Useful information

Description

Seattleites first heard of the Klondike strike on July 17, 1897, when the steamship Portland arrived in town from Alaska, carrying men hefting sacks of gold. Overnight, the city was struck with gold fever, and many residents quit their jobs to get rich quick in the northern hinterlands. At the same time, Seattle merchants got rich themselves by outfitting the prospectors.
