Due its extraordinary dimensions, the Temple of Artemis (3C BCE) rivalled the Ionian temples of Ephesus, Samos and Didyma in importance. Although only the skeleton of this temple is now visible, it remains very moving. Its vestiges include imposing columns, the sculpted capitals of which are among the finest of their genre. The small Byzantine church abutting the monument appears tiny in comparison.
