Odd though it is to describe a cemetery as joyful, this is the best description for the one in the village of Sapânta, a veritable work of art in the naïf style by Ion Stan Patras (1908-1977). It has around 700 blue painted crosses enhanced in livelier colours, on which the artist has carved portraits or scenes representing a significant moment in the lives of the deceased. Each is also finished off with a touching and witty epitaph. Peri monastery is 1km away and built along traditional lines.
