Cuba has no shortage of heroes, and here is another, a son of Santiago whose feats of arms earned him the nickname "the bronze titan". General Antonio Maceo was killed in 1896, leaving a whole host of poignant mementoes in this typical 19C house, including personal papers relating to the wars of independence, the flag flown to rally his troops and press cuttings from his pioneering paper Cubano Libre. An airy patio shaded by mango trees further evokes his memory.
