Dostoevsky's work is steeped in the working-class atmosphere of 19C St Petersburg, in particular of the low-life Hay Square district, which swarmed with cabarets, brothels and inns of ill repute. Today the "underbelly of St. Petersburg", formerly the site of a wood, livestock and hay market, has had a facelift and is now depicted by modern steel and granite banks and shopping malls.
