Peter and Paul Cathedral is visible from afar with its impressive (122.5m high) slender bell tower, topped by a gilded angel and chimes that play the former Russian anthem (at midday and 6pm). The cathedral, built between 1714 and 1733 by Domenico Trezzini, is striking by its bright colours, countless paintings and pulpit, a rarity in an Orthodox church suggesting the Italian architect's influence. The nave of the cathedral is the burial place of the Romanov family.
