Useful information

Description

The Janiculum (Gianicolo in Italian) hill stands on the west bank of the Tiber surrounded by walls built by Urban VIII in the 17C, in which the entrance gate Porta San Pancrazio is built. According to one of the oldest legends in Roman mythology, this was the site of a city founded by the god Janus, hence its name. The Passeggiata del Gianicolo (Janiculum walk), lined with busts of Garibaldi's men, winds along the crest of the ridge shaded by umbrella pines and offering some of the finest views of Rome.
