The mountainous Gambier archipelago, the most remote in French Polynesia, was chosen in the 19C by Fathers Laval and Caret as the base for their evangelical mission. The rich religious heritage of Mangareva bears witness to this past, combined with iconic Polynesian images of beaches, lagoons and palm trees.
