Candi Plaosan is a complex of temples 2km from Prambanan, combining Hindu and Buddhist decorative elements. The sanctuary is thought to celebrate the union of a Buddhist princess, Shailendra, and a Hindu king, Sanjaya, the two dynasties that shared Java at the time (9C). To the north stands a pair of twin temples both containing three cells, and inside each of which, two impressive bodhisattva flank pedestals formerly occupied by a bronze Buddha. Outside are delicate bas-reliefs of dancers.
