The huge cathedral of Pavia is crowned by one of the largest domes in Italy. Its construction began in 1488 and, according to the inhabitants of Pavia, both Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci contributed to the design of the plans. Because of its complex design, the dome was only completed in 1887. Inside the cathedral, visitors are struck by the natural light which pours in through the windows. The façade dates from the 19C. The remains of a medieval tower which collapsed in 1989 can be seen to the left of the church.
