Founded in 1306, this Carthusian monastery, one of the most extensive architectural groups of southern Italy with Unesco status, is today essentially Baroque: from the Foresteria cloister, a cedar porch leads into a lavishly decorated church, home to two fine 16C chancels. Around the great cloister are the monks' cells. A majestic and theatrical 18C staircase was inspired by works by Luigi Vanvitelli.
