Okuizumo Tatara and Japanese Sword Museum
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

This museum charts iron manufacturing in the Okuizumo region, which was said to produce the finest and strongest swords up until the early 20C. A replica of a traditional tatara furnace provides an insight into how iron is forged out of ferrous sand and carbon. An authentic forge stages demonstrations, while a samurai warrior illustrates the battodo art of sword-cutting, using straw models in the heart of the garden.
