Description
The interior of Igreja de Santa Maria is remarkable with its blue 17C azulejos, large-format paintings and ceiling painted with grotesques. In the chancel, notice in a niche on the left a Renaissance tomb topped with a Pietà accompanied by female saints and Nicodemus coming to hide the body of Christ. It was here, in 1444, that the young King Afonso V married his cousin Isabel, then aged eight.
