Falster is in the middle of the group of islands lying off the southern tip of Zealand. Its location means that the island generally enjoys a milder and sunnier climate than the rest of the country, and the magnificent beaches on its eastern coast, on the shores of the Baltic, are renowned. Two expressways cross the Storstrømmen (the strait) to link Falster to the south of Zealand. Storstrøm Bridge, which joins the island to Vordingborg, was complemented by Farø's two bridges, inaugurated in 1985: the second, an impressive cable-stayed bridge between the little island of Farø and Falster, soars high up above the sea so that ships can pass below.
