Useful information

Description

Bolton Priory was founded by the Augustinians c 1154 in a setting of great beauty on a bend in the River Wharfe. Upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1539), the lead was stripped from the roofs. Next to the ruins, St Mary and St Cuthbert Church was spared and remains a place of worship today. The main façade is an outstanding example of the Early English architectural style.
