The island is now connected to the continent by a 4km/2.5mi-long causeway. The polders, used for cereal farming and pastureland, form a neat checkerboard pattern with farmsteads perched on hillocks. The heart of the island is the charming town of Süden. The voluntarily unspoiled countryside is home to varied wildlife.
