Useful information

Description

Owned by the National Parks Service, Melrose is an authentic Antebellum town estate (1845), complete with slave quarters and other outhouses, such as the kitchen, stables and privies. A guided tour of the house and grounds gives an insight into the lives of the slaves and the slave owners alike, including the slaves' individualized bell-summoning system and the tragedies linked to a then-innovative lead-lined cistern system.
