Twenty-Six Martyrs Memorial
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Twenty-six Christians - 6 foreigners and 20 Japanese - were forced to walk from Kyoto to this Japanese Golgotha on Nishizaka Hill, where they were crucified on 5 February 1597. This monument was built in 1962 to pay homage to the Christian martyrs, a century after their canonisation. The little museum at the rear recounts the history of Nagasaki's "Hidden Christians".
