The Moundville Archaeological Park was once home to the largest Native American settlement in southeast America (1000-1500 CE). Today, more than twenty-six flat-topped earthen mounds, built around a central plaza, remain; these platforms are thought to have served as noblemen's residences and for mortuary and other purposes.
