Description

A parish close can be recognised by its closed area comprised of a church, cemetery, generally an ossuary, calvary, outer sacristy and often a monumental or "triumphal" arch or porch. The first major close is that of St-Thégonnec, known for its superb calvary, funerary chapel, triumphal arch and church. Guimiliau boasts a magnificent calvary sculpted with 200 figures and a church with a fine south porch. Admire the church at Lampaul-Guimiliau, Landivisiau and Bodilis. At La Roche-Maurice the ossuary is one of the most famous of Brittany. The close of Pencran with its 16C calvary, and the church of La Martyre, whose lovely south porch and stained-glass windows are worthy of mention. At Sizun you will be able admire the triple triumphal porch and the ossuary, and Commana's 16 and 17C church. In the small close of Pleyber-Christ, the Gothic and Romanesque church has a triumphal porch honouring those who died in the First World War. In addition to the parish closes, take the time to visit Landerneau and pause on the banks of the estuary to admire the Pont de Rohan, built in 1510 and one of the oldest inhabited bridges in Europe. Stop at the Roc Trévezel and take in the view of the Armorican mountains, and at the Ecomusée of the Arrée Mountains (Moulins de Kerouat), a revamped 19C village.
