The Scenic Byway 279, starting from Moab, follows the Colorado River southwestwards through flamboyant landscapes and passes close to natural arches and Native American petroglyphs. It also offers several well-marked hiking trails, such as the Portal Overlook Trail, which offers panoramic views of the Moab Valley. Finally, it ends in front of a potash mine, potash being one of the region's riches, used as an agricultural fertiliser.
