Useful information

Description

Isla Saona (over 100km2) was inhabited by the Taíno, as shown by archaeological excavations. In the 17C and 18C, the island was a hideaway for pirates and buccaneers. In the 1940s-50s it was repopulated, as the government settled a dozen families here. Their descendents now make up the 360-strong population of the delightful village of Mano Juan, with colourful houses and sandy streets. White-sand beaches, clear water and starfish (which should not be taken out of the water).
