Wat Chong Klang
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

The wihan at the Wat Chong Klang houses 180 Burmese paintings on glass (wall on the left-hand side) which depict the former lives, or jataka, of Buddha. A room to the left contains around thirty finely sculpted wooden statuettes, bought from the Burmese in 1869. These works, highlighting the jataka of Vessantara, are a marvellous illustration of Burmese art. The adjoining Wat Chong Kham, a vast Shan monastery, was rebuilt following a fire that destroyed it in 1970, and houses a highly venerated 5m-high Buddha. The tiered roof endows the building with a majestic appearance.
